Our story:
Hello there, fellow coffee connoisseur. My name is Glen, and I am the Fire Chief that roasts the coffee! I am very humbled to have held that position for many years in a small Northern Michigan town. I have been on the fire department for a total of 26 years. I have helped put many fires out, shown up on the scenes of some sadly wicked auto accidents (especially once the snow starts flying), and made many dives to retrieve someone’s loved one. None of which could ever be done by just me alone, and for that, I am grateful to have a great group of fire personnel to work with. Together we make a pretty awesome hardworking team. Let us just say we are not afraid to get in there and get the job done.
I am married and have seven children; three are grown and married with families of their own, so we have four at home. We live in what some may claim to be “In the Sticks,” others claim that it is “God’s Country.” We claim all of the above and proclaim our home to be “Our little piece of Heaven here on earth.” And right here is where we roast our coffee, in “The Roast House;” a little log cabin just perfect to roast our carefully selected beans in. No middleman here. We purchase only the highest grade Arabica raw coffee beans. We roast, blend, flavor, and package; sending out your requests within 24 hours of the roast.
My wife and I have both dappled in coffee over the years. We have also been frustrated with store-bought coffee and stale coffee beans. We were tired of wasting our hard-earned money on what we had expected to be “good coffee.” After maintaining a successful coffee roasting business for almost 20 years, the owners decided it was time to move on and accomplish some of their other dreams and goals in life. Thankfully, they thought of us and offered us their equipment and supply inventory. We said, “Absolutely, Count us in.” We were excited and anxious to take over. We felt that with the Good Lord’s help, what we have learned about coffee, the roasting method we would be using, all the proven research available about the best packaging techniques using a method of preserving every bit of freshness, our ideas, and my family’s love for a GOOD, WHOLESOME cup of coffee we have undoubtedly come up with some of the most freshest, tastiest, and downright GOOD coffees that you will most certainly be pleased with and enjoy.
Sadly our economy is on the mind of most people. And like most, we don’t want to waste our money, and we all want the biggest bang for our buck. Simply stated, that should be no different when it comes to something as small as a cup of coffee. There should be no settling when it comes to that “cup of coffee,” “Morning Joe,” or “Afternoon Java.” After all, it’s what gets a lot of us going in the morning, especially on those cold, rainy, dreary days. A cup of coffee needs to cheer you when you are down in the dumps, it needs to refresh and revitalize you before “a big meeting,” it needs to provide you with that boost on the drive home, it needs to relax you in the evening after putting the children to bed, or taste just right with your perfect after-dinner dessert. We can furnish you with all of those coffees and more. We have blends and flavors for just about every occasion. Our prices are fair and justified. We are not in the business to take advantage of anyone. Our goal at Back Draft Roasting Company is to provide you with a truly enjoyable, noticeably tasty, fresh cup of coffee, without breaking the piggy bank. We have your coffee!
Our coffee is sent out whole bean unless otherwise stated. No matter what brewing method you use, we will be happy to grind it to your desired grind. In order to preserve its freshness, we ask that you keep your whole bean coffee in the freezer and only take out enough to grind at one time. Ground coffee should be kept in the refrigerator but sadly loses its freshness after about two weeks. Whole beans in the freezer can stay fresh for up to 3 months. We also suggest placing your bagged beans in an airtight container so they do not to absorb any odors in your fridge and freezer.
Let us share with you our carefully selected blends and flavors, see our lists of varietals (single bean roasts), blends (more than one bean type blended together to create a specific and defined taste), or flavored (roasted beans flavored with just a little of this or a hint of that to tickle your taste buds.) All of our coffees will have you asking for “1 more cup, please.”
