It Continues With the Roasters!
* BackDraft Roasting Co. uses small batch carousel roasters which use a circular movement like a carousel and gently air roast ¼ lb of green coffee beans per batch. This allows a yield of 120 – 135, 6 ounce cups of java per pound! As we grow, we add more – not larger – roasters.
* Other roasters use production drum roasters which roast anywhere from 15 to 300 + lbs of coffee per batch. The weight and friction from the drum movement pulverizes and otherwise damages the beans. This decreases yield from coffee roasted by this method to 90 – 100, 6 ounce cups per pound.
* Because of the design of the roaster, BackDraft Roasting Co. visually monitors each batch of beans during the roasting process. The moisture levels vary significantly in green coffee beans – even within the same harvest, same pick, same bag – this is important to the continuity of the roast. We guarantee your enjoyment of that continuity with each pound of BackDraft Roasting Co. coffee!
* Other roasters cannot see what is happening during the roasting process. At a specific time during the roasting period, they insert a ‘tryer’ – looks like a measuring cup shaped like a pie wedge – into the drum. The tryer is pulled out and the roasting beans examined. If the roasting process has proceeded too far or not uniformly, there is no correction method available. That can explain the lack of consistency in coffee labeled the same, but which tastes different from batch to batch.
